Field and Pastures: Creating a Balance

Determining The Best Location For A Well

If you are building a new home in a rural area, you will likely need to have a well on the property, as you won't have access to a municipal water supply. There are a lot of details involved in planning water drilling for a well, and there are many things that you need to take care of before you can even think about starting the work, such as determining the best location on your property for the well. Here are some things to consider when looking for the best spot.

Check Out Other Area Wells

One of the first things to do is to find out about other wells drilled on area properties. For instance, find out how deep they are so you will know how deep your well will need to be in order to get plenty of water and water pressure. This is a great way to get to know your new neighbours, and they may be able to tell you about older wells on their properties when there are no existing records on file that you can check.

Look at a Property Survey

If there is not already a survey for the property, have one done. It is well worth the cost. The survey will tell you the exact boundaries of the property. The last thing you want is to start digging only to find out that the property you are digging on is not yours. You should also check out various types of maps, including,

  • Geologic Maps – These maps show where rock formations are exposed, so you can find rocky areas that may not be best for water drilling. It also shows the best areas to find the most ground water. These areas will be where you will want to have your well.
  • Topographic Maps – These show the contours of the land and are also used to figure out where the best areas are for water drilling. If you see plant life on these maps, there is a good chance that there is ground water, and it is a good spot for a well.

Hire A Professional

One of the best ways to figure out the best location for a well is to have a professional water driller come to your property and check it out for themselves. They often have equipment that is used to locate water. You are going to need to hire someone to dig the well anyway, so you may as well take that extra step and also hire them for this phase of the job.
